Sean Francis, MD, MBA

University of Louisville

Year started working as Chair: 2016

Who inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
There have been so many to thank; Ray Lee, Don Gallup, Veronica Mallet, Laverne Mensah, Michael Macfee, Larry Devoe, Morehouse College faculty. The list is long.

What is the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career?
Grab good mentors and be persistent. Never accept “This can’t be done,” as an answer.

What helped prepare you the most for becoming Chair?
Exposure to this University’s environment as a Division Chief and business school.

What skill do you think everyone should learn?
How to manage the difficult employee. Unfortunately, it feels like a significant portion of one’s time is spent dealing with this minority. There is often no simple means of resolution, and they never seem to tire.

What is your secret talent no one knows about?
I can throw a pretty mean split fingered fastball. This serves absolutely no use in my life today.

What was the last book you read or movie you saw? Would you recommend it?
The biography of Trevor Noah, South African comedian. I would definitely recommend it.
